Summersalt

Summersalt was built by myself in Cairns in 1986/7 and launched on the 17th of November 1987.

She represented the first of my designs but with the hulls built from the 28’ Harrier hull molds.

I modified the mold by extending the sterns by a metre and then the hulls by pushing them wider after they were removed from the mold. Hull construction features foam sandwich sides for stiffness with solid f/glass bottoms for strength. Apart from a lightweight 225gr CSM on the gelcoat, knitted double bias or triaxial fabrics have been used throughout with vinylestre resin.

The underwing is 12mm ply while the 4 main strength, full width bulkheads are 12mm (for the main or mast b/head ) and 9mm with laminated Western Red Cedar (WRC) timber beams.

The cabin and deck is strip planked WRC with double bias and triaxial f/glass fabrics.

WEST epoxy resin is used for all the strip planking and saturation

Structurally, the boat is very stiff compared to similar catamarans.

The accommodation layout is ideal for a live aboard couple with the large double berth in the main saloon. I lived aboard for 12 years while cruising and racing between Queensland and Thailand.

Summersalt never failed to impress with the roominess of her interior and her sailing performance, often embarrassing larger so called performance cruising catamarans. She has won many races not only in Queensland and Thailand but also in Indonesia. Her most notable performance was in winning the Cairns to Port Moresby Race in 1993, covering the 460 ocean miles in 35 hours and 58 minutes at an average speed of nearly 13 knots. Returning to Cairns from Port Moresby into winds of up to 30 knots, Summersalt was the only boat of the returning fleet to be able to fetch Cairns on one tack.

On a passage the boat is sailed very easily single handed or by a couple. Returning to Australia in 1992 after the first cruise to Thailand, Summersalt did the 2500 miles from Singapore to Thursday Island in 18 days thru the reef strewn waters of Indonesia. This passage was done 2 handed with the autopilot steering nearly all the time in mostly variable but following winds. The fact that the only form of charging for the single 75amp battery was one 42 watt solar panel is indicative of how easy the boat is on the helm, even in following seas.

In 2004 Summersalt had a refit in Phuket with the cabin being raised to give a head room of 1.58m in the saloon.

In 2007 all the standing rigging was replaced as were all the halyards. On one hull the bottom has a copper-epoxy treatment with antifoul on the other hull. I have the copper oxide powder for the other hull.
