Construction

The Firefly 850 Sports is designed to be built using the strip plank sandwich construction method utilizing 10mm Western Red Cedar planks as the core with 230 gr/m2 Unidirectional Fiberglass (230 UNI) laid at 90 degrees across the planks as the laminate. Extra layers of 230 UNI are utilized for added reinforcement at strategic areas around the beams with added layers of 200 gr/m2 Plain Weave Cloth below the waterline and on the bows for added grounding protection. Hulls and Decks are built as separate items over temporary MDF or plywood frames.

Alternatively hulls and decks could be built in foam sandwich construction with a saving of about 100 kgs. on the finished boat.

Bulkheads, bunks aft decks and swim steps are all 12.7 mm Corecell or Divinycell with 195gr/m2 Carbon Twill Cloth on either side. Internal lockers are of 10mm Corecell with 300PWC on the upper or outer face and 200PWC on the lower or inner face. The cockpit deck is 16mm Corecell or Divinycell with 400 gr/m2 Double Bias Cloth outside and the 195gr/m2 Carbon Twill Cloth inside. Alternatively, 300gr/m2 Plain Weave fiberglass cloth could be used instead of the 195gr/m2 Carbon Twill with a weight gain of approximately 25 kgs.
